But what if you walked those same halls and heard students having serious conversations about the benefits of abstinence? With the aid of Amplify Youth Development’s authentic speakers, engaging activities, and holistic sexual health curriculum, you may hear more of the latter. During my freshman year health class, Amplify delivered a presentation, and it was like none other. The atmosphere was fun and open — not awkward, like so many sex ed classes are. In fact, by the end of the workshop, our class was debating often taboo topics, like “Is oral sex really sex?”
That openness was fostered by one of the Amplify speakers, who shared her story about getting pregnant and catching an STD. We got to see the real impact that sex had on her life, even years later. Everyone – even kids who weren’t in the class – talked about her story. It brought to life the realities that can result from having sex before marriage.
We also talked about healthy relationships, STDs, and the emotional consequences of just hooking up.
Most students have been taught the value of abstinence, but this class challenged us to define our boundaries within a relationship.
While I had already made up my mind to remain abstinent, Amplify reinforced my decision. And now I — along with many of my classmates — have defined definite boundaries to guide dating relationships.
